1. Christmas traditions in the UK
There are 8 public holidays or bank holidays in a year in Great Britain. They are : Christmas Day, Boxing Day, Easter Monday, May Day, Spring Bank Holiday and Late Summer Bank Holiday. Public Holidays in Great Britain are called bank holidays because banks as well as most of offices and shops are closed. Christmas is the most popular holiday. Children enjoy receiving presents which are traditionally put into the stocking. Most houses are decorated with holly and there is usually a Christmas tree in the corner of the living room. The traditional Christmas dinner includes roast turkey or goose with potatoes, peas and carrots and pudding for dessert. An important part of Christmas is carol singing.
For most British families, this is the most important festival of the year. It combines the Christian celebration or the birth of Christ with the traditional festivities of winter. The celebration of Christmas in England last 3 days. Christmas Eve, Christmas day and the Day of Donation (gift). A week before the holiday home is thoroughly clean, wipe to Shine window. On the Sunday before Christmas many churches hold a carol service where special hymns are sung. Sometimes carol-singers can be heard on the streets as they collect money for charity. Most families decorate their houses with brightly-colored paper or holly, and they usually have a Christmas tree in the corner of the front room, glittering with colored lights and decorations.
2. Traditions of celebrating Christmas in Belarus
Christmas is one of the most popular and beautiful holidays in the whole world. In Belarus, Christmas is celebrated twice: on January 7th (Orthodox), or on December 25th (Catholic). But only 18% of Catholics live here, especially in the west of the country. Catholic Christmas coincides with an ancient holiday called Kolyady, which was mainly associated with the Winter Solstice and symbolized the beginning of the year.
Caroling is a part of the Belarus Christmas traditions. As in other countries, this tradition has its roots in older, pagan traditions, when troupes of carolers would dress up as animals and fantastic beasts to scare away evil spirits and collect money or food in return for their services.
Christmas in Belarus is accompanied by colorful folk customs. There were and there are still popular Christmas fortune-telling, especially among girls. This holiday is associated with the custom of caroling - going from home to home for children and youth with songs and good wishes.
3. Similarities and differences in the traditions of celebrating Christmas in Belarus and the UK
Every nation and every country has its own customs and traditions. Britain is different from our own country. This is natural. In Britain traditions play probably a more important part in the life of the people than in Belarus.
Some of them appeared ages ago and are unique for one particular country, others can be found all over the world. The way people celebrate this or that holiday can tell much about their culture and way of life.
The main difference between celebrating Christmas in Belarus and the UK is that in Belarus Christmas is celebrated twice: on January 7th (Orthodox), or on December 25th (Catholic).
Catholic and Protestant Christians might go to a Midnight Mass service on the 24th December and/or a Christmas Day service on the 25th December. For Orthodox Christian the main Christmas service normally starts at midnight on the 6th/7th January following the hungry Kućcia and the night time service can last for several hours! Then Christmas Day, on the 7th January, is a public holiday where people visit family and friends.
CONCLUSION
Traditions develop gradually over centuries and keep on developing. Tradition and custom are usually passed on from generation to generation.
