The first edition of the Belarusian Red Book was published in 1981, and back then it consisted of 165 points. The Book is updated every 10 years.
Red Book of Belarus was created to save flora and fauna from being totally destroyed or killed. The Belarusian Ministry of Nature and Environmental Protection has prepared a list of rare animals and plants to be included in the new edition of the Belarusian Red Book. According to the international regulations each country is supposed to renew the national list of rare animals and plants every ten years. New additions of the book contain species which are in danger and can disappear.

In 1979 the Resolution of the Council of Ministers of the Belarussian Soviet Socialist Republic approved the Red list of endangered species of the Belarussian Soviet Socialist Republic and related regulations. For the purpose of conservation and increase in numbers of rare and endangered animal species the first edition of the Red list of endangered species of Belarus (1981) included 80 animal and 85 vascular plants species. There were 182 animal, 180 plant, 17 mushroom and 17 lichen species listed among rare and endangered species in the second edition.

The Red Book of Belarus began just thirty years ago, with the first edition appearing in 1981, featuring 80 species of animals and 85 plants. By that time, similar editions were common in the West, with European ecologists being the first to see the threat of technological progress to the environment. In 1978, the first Red Book of the USSR was released.
The Belarusian Red Book ‘inhabitants’ comprise six categories, depending on their proximity to extinction. The zero category — unofficially called ‘the black list’ — unites plants and animals which have completely disappeared from Belarusian territory. Among them are such animals as forest cats, bustards, muskrats and freshwater pearl mussels; plants include wild gladioli, ghost orchids and another 46 species which have not been found in Belarus over the past century. Scientists cannot say for sure whether these are lost forever.
Specialists from the Ministry for Natural Resources and Environmental Protection say that bustards were last seen in Belarus in the 1930s, in Brest Region’s Pruzhany. Muskrats haven’t been observed since the early 20th century,
