STYLISTIC ANALYSIS OF THE POEM «MY HEART'S IN THE HIGHLANDS»
Robert Burns is a great national Romantic poet in the late 18th century of Scotland and England. He is widely-known around the world and his popular poem «My heart in the Highlands» is thoughts to be an «anthem» of Scotland. R. Burns's lyrics have occupied a significant position in the history of British literature. His works are unique and exceptional in their kind, as noted by many contemporaries of the poet. Burns was close to the natural world and this explains the peculiarity of his perception of the world and the artistic originality of the lyrics.
Surprisingly, despite the poet's popularity in the worlds and especially in post-Soviet countries, Robert Burns is hardly ever studied in Scottish schools. We are familiar with his amazing works thanks to the excellent translations of Samuel Marshak.
Robert Burns is famously known for his love of Nature. He wrote many poems on this theme and many of his poems (basically songs). A fine example of Burns is My Heart’s in the Highlands. Written in the year 1790. It was published in the five-volume edition of James Johnson's Scottish Music Museum (1787-1797).
At this time Burns lives and works at Ellisland Farm. In this picturesque foothill area, he built a house and ran his own farm, but all this turned out to be financially unprofitable, he was looking for work in the city and probably just at the time of writing the poem received an offer to become an excise tax collector in Dumfries.
The highlands of Scotland which are greatly admired for its scenic beauty and mesmerizing visual charms is the birthplace of the poet Burns. The poet was sorry to part with his favorite places, with the northern nature, which he subtly felt and loved, and on this topic, he wrote this poem.
