Canada is the second largest country in the world. Only Russia has a greater land area. About 27 million people live in Canada. About 80% of them live within 300 kilometers of Canada’s southern border. Over the quarters of Canada’s people live in cities or towns. Montreal and Toronto are the two largest cities; Ottawa is the national’s capital.
A wealth of natural resources has always been Canada’s greatest possession. During colonial times, most Canadians earned their living by farming, finishing, forestry, or fur trapping. Today these industries are still important and produce valuable exports. But the main economic fields are service industries and manufacturing. Canada’s gross national product (GNP) – that is the total value of all goods and services produced by a country in a year – ranks among the top 10 in the world.
The Canadian economy is based on private enterprise. But the national and provincial governments play an active role in many economic activities. For example, they provide health insurance that guarantees medical care to all Canadians. The federal and provincial governments also own broadcasting companies, transportation firms, and utilities.
Foreign investment has a major influence on Canada’s economy. United States firms affect the economy, both through ownerships and though financing of Canadian owned corporations. Great Britain, Japan, and Germany also have large investments in Canada. Most Canadians feels that foreign controlled businesses do not know or care enough about the country’s needs. Canada also suffers from the outflow of interest payments and profits.
