I. Introduction.

The passage under analysis is a piece from the novel "The Cabala" by an American playwright and novelist Thornton Wilder.


II. Information about the author.

Thornton Wilder is am American writer whose innovative novels and plays reflect his views of the universal truths in human nature.


III. Summary.

The passage under analysis we are introduced to two young men, the narrator and apparently his friend Blair, who arrived to Rome recently and are busy with fitting out the narrator’s new apartment and arranging a cooker for him. 


IV. Analysis of the text.

Linguistic analysis of the text.
The language of the extract appears to be quite complicated and bookish, but graceful and intelligent, with many long sentences and descriptions. Such a relatively reserved manner of narration is used, as it seems to me, to emphasize the overall official environment of European secular society and people’s interaction within it. 
The passage is also full of references to Roman Catholic Church and objects related with it and with religion in general: e.g., the basilica of Santa Maria, She was a Roman Catholic, the Supreme Pontiff, a Countess of the Papal States, the Pauline Privilege, Protestants, Roman Catholic circles, etc. Such an abundance of mentions of things related to religion in a short piece of text also lets the reader to dive into the atmosphere of Europe of those times when society, politics and domestic life was tightly connected with church.


V. Summary.

T.Wilder demonstrates us his exceptional talent to describe people and atmosphere so that a vivid image of the story emerges in readers’ mind.
