THE IMAGES OF THE MAIN CHARACTERS IN SHAKESPEARE'S TRAGEDY “ROMEO AND JULIET”
Introduction. The work of the great playwright William Shakespeare can be divided into several periods. The first of them is characterized by early tragedies, the texts of which are imbued with faith in justice and hope for happiness. This is followed by a transitional stage. And finally, the dark period of the late tragedies.
The appearance of the play “Romeo and Juliet” was a significant event in the history of not only English, but also world literature. It was the beginning of a new, so-called Shakespearean stage.
The play “Romeo and Juliet” is one of those works of the author that were written by him in the earliest period of his work. Shakespeare produced his famous play between 1591 and 1595.
Many works of literary critics and researchers are devoted to the analysis of this work. The authors study the problems, the image of love, life and society depicted in William Shakespeare's play “Romeo and Juliet”. No less works are devoted to the analysis and interpretation of the images of the main characters of the great tragedy. All this indicates the relevance of this play today.
The purpose of this study is to analyze in detail the images of two main characters – Romeo and Juliet – in William Shakespeare's play “Romeo and Juliet”.
Main body. In the center of events are two families: The Montagues and the Capulets. There was a long-standing feud between them. About its causes exactly no one knows. So the clan representatives simply accepted the fact that they were enemies. So the playwright hints at the ossification of a conservative society full of absurd conventions.
Romeo Montague and his family. The Montagues are a noble and wealthy family. Giovanni Montague is the head of the family. His word is always decisive in any matter. Junior members recognize the authority of the chapter. Valentina is a Montague, the wife of Giovanni. Romeo is their son. Benvolio is a Montague tribesman and a friend of Romeo's.
